"GIVE IT A GO"
Trains hold a unique fascination with young and old alike with many who desire to be a train driver.

There are very few opportunities for disabled people, those who can and cannot get out of a wheelchair and GIVE IT A GO to drive a 7 1/4 inch miniature electric train.

GIVE IT A GO can give the opportunity to drive a 7 1/4 inch miniature electric train.

Funded by Scope Millennium Awards, WALRUS can offer a limited number of training places for disabled people.

W.A.L.R.U.S. project founded by Katie Fairbank
Katie discovered a love of model trains as a child and this fascination in turn has developed into a project to allow herself and other disabled people the chance to drive a minature train. Katie is an enthusiastic member of The Huddersfield Society of Model Engineers and developed this project to coincide with the new track built to mark the Millennium. Train in The Park Website

We will be using the 540 meter miniature train track, owned by the Huddersfield Society of Model Engineers and operated by the Greenhead Park Miniature Railway Trust. The track, constructed to mark Y2K was designed to allow more disabled people to integrate and participate with the voluntary members of the Huddersfield Society of Model Engineers and allow them to GIVE IT A GO at driving a train. Greenhead Park is located just outside Huddersfield town centre in West Yorkshire.

W.A.L.R.U.S
We can give all disabled people the chance to have a ride on this railway, but due to the insurance requirement we can only offer the train driver scheme to people with a physical disabilty who could operate the simple hand speed controller as illustrated below. They would also need to pass an assesment by WALRUS.
